A six-match collapse explains the real job for 2027
Punjab Kings finished IPL 2026 with seven wins, six defeats and one no result from 14 matches. Their route to 15 points shows why the squad needs targeted changes.

Punjab earned 86.7% of their final points in the opening seven matches. They then went six games without a point before beating Lucknow Super Giants by seven wickets. Iyer made an unbeaten 101, but Rajasthan Royals took fourth place with 16 points, one ahead of PBKS.
Punjab did not lack match winners. Their solutions stopped working for a long stretch. The 2027 plan needs clearer roles, cover for loss of form and a bowling attack with more than one route to wickets.
Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting remain the leadership pair
Shreyas Iyer took charge in 2025, led PBKS to their first final in 11 years and remained captain in 2026. His unbeaten century in the last match of IPL 2026 showed why Punjab rely on him when a chase needs control.
Punjab appointed Ricky Ponting on a four-year contract before IPL 2025, so the agreement covers 2027. The official Punjab Kings website lists Ponting alongside assistant coach Brad Haddin and fast bowling coach James Hopes.
The Iyer and Ponting partnership produced a league-stage first-place finish and a final appearance in 2025. Their next test is stopping another prolonged loss of form from undoing a strong start.
The batting core carried a heavy share of the 2026 runs
Prabhsimran Singh led Punjab’s 2026 run list with 510. Shreyas Iyer scored 498 and Cooper Connolly added 491. Together, the top three contributed 1,499 of the 2,711 team runs displayed by Punjab Kings, a 55.3% share.
That concentration is both a strength and a warning. Priyansh Arya, Shashank Singh, Nehal Wadhera and Marcus Stoinis add power, but two early wickets can expose the difference between batting depth on paper and batting depth in a match.
Prabhsimran’s value extends beyond his runs. An Indian wicketkeeper who can open gives Punjab more freedom when choosing overseas players. Connolly adds left-handed batting and secondary spin, while Iyer connects the powerplay hitters with the finishers.
Punjab need more wickets without weakening the batting
Arshdeep Singh led PBKS in IPL 2026 with 14 wickets. Yuzvendra Chahal took 12 and Vijaykumar Vyshak nine. No Punjab bowler reached the tournament’s top wicket-taking group, leaving less margin when the batting failed.
Punjab must decide which phases need reinforcement. Arshdeep covers the new ball and death overs, Chahal attacks through the middle, and Marco Jansen offers left-arm pace plus lower-order batting. The unit needs another dependable option when those plans are unavailable or expensive.

Four decisions can shape the PBKS mini auction
Punjab’s mini auction strategy depends on releases and available purse, neither of which is final. The 2026 evidence still points to four practical decisions.
- Find another reliable wicket-taking route. Arshdeep and Chahal cannot be expected to solve every phase across a full season.
- Protect the middle order from sudden collapses. Punjab need a batter or all-rounder whose role remains clear when the top three do not supply most of the runs.
- Settle the overseas combination. Stoinis, Jansen, Omarzai, Connolly, Owen, Bartlett, Ferguson and Dwarshuis cover overlapping skills. Punjab need complementary roles, not several players competing for the same one.
- Build Indian pace cover. Domestic bowling depth gives the team more freedom to change overseas batters and all-rounders according to the venue.
These are refinements, not reasons to dismantle the core. Punjab reached the 2025 final and missed the 2026 playoffs by one point. The question is whether they can hold their level for 14 matches.
New Chandigarh is the centre of Punjab’s home campaign
Punjab Kings are based in New Chandigarh, with Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur serving as their main home ground. The franchise has also staged home matches at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
The 2027 venue split has not been published. The tournament runs from March 10 to May 15, while Punjab’s dates and grounds will appear on the IPL 2027 schedule after release.
Mullanpur and Dharamsala do not always reward the same approach. A squad built for both needs pace variety, powerplay control and adaptable batting.
Punjab Kings are still chasing their first IPL title
The franchise began as Kings XI Punjab in 2008 and adopted the Punjab Kings name before IPL 2021. PBKS have reached two finals, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025. They have not won the IPL title.
