Lucknow Super Giants IPL 2027: Kuldeep Joins a Team Without a Named Captain

LSG finished last in 2026 with four wins from 14 matches. Pant’s departure removed the captain, leading run scorer and an Indian wicketkeeper-batter, while Kuldeep strengthens a different role.

The current LSG team page lists the following 25 players after the Pant-Kuldeep trade. This is the starting pool for IPL 2027 planning, not a final retention or auction list.

The Pant-Kuldeep trade changed three LSG roles at once

The June trade was not a like-for-like exchange. Pant led LSG in 2026, kept wicket and topped the team’s batting list with 312 runs from 14 matches. When he returned to Delhi Capitals, Lucknow lost an Indian player who covered leadership, wicketkeeping and a middle-order batting place.

Kuldeep gives LSG a proven Indian spinner with 112 IPL wickets on his current franchise profile. He joins a spin group containing Digvesh Singh Rathi, M Siddharth, Shahbaz Ahmed and George Linde, allowing LSG to build around an Indian specialist.

Nicholas Pooran and Josh Inglis are established keepers, but both are overseas players. Mukul Choudhary is the Indian wicketkeeping option in the current pool. Selecting Pooran or Inglis behind the stumps uses one of four overseas places.

Why did Lucknow Super Giants finish last in IPL 2026?

LSG finished 10th because their runs and bowling resources did not turn into enough complete match performances. They won four games, lost ten and ended with a net run rate of -0.740. It was the first last-place finish in franchise history and their third straight season outside the playoffs.

The team scored 2,511 runs across 14 matches. Dividing that total by the schedule gives 179.4 runs per match, which is not the output of a batting group that failed every week. The larger problem was conversion. LSG took 71 wickets, equal to 5.1 per match, and too often allowed opponents to preserve wickets while controlling a chase.

The final league match captured that imbalance. LSG made 196 for 6 against Punjab Kings at Ekana, but Punjab reached 200 for 3 in 18 overs. More batting power alone would not have solved that seven-wicket defeat.

Pant’s 312 runs being enough to lead the team shows that no batter produced a large season. IPL 2027 needs clearer batting responsibility, not simply another aggressive name.

Prince Yadav and Kuldeep can give the attack a clearer centre

Prince Yadav was LSG’s leading wicket-taker in 2026 with 16 wickets from 14 matches at an economy rate of 8.82. He claimed 22.5 percent of the team’s 71 wickets, a meaningful return in a season where the attack rarely controlled games as a unit.

Kuldeep now gives LSG a second Indian bowler around whom they can plan full spells. The pair offers different problems: Prince attacks with pace, while Kuldeep changes pace, angle and direction through left-arm wrist-spin. Digvesh and M Siddharth add more spin choices for Ekana.

The pace list already includes Mohammed Shami, Avesh Khan, Anrich Nortje, Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan. LSG need role certainty and dependable end-overs execution more than another collection of similar bowlers. Retention decisions will show whether a death-bowling purchase is needed.

Who will captain LSG in IPL 2027?

Lucknow Super Giants have not named their IPL 2027 captain. Pant asked to leave the role after the 2026 season, and his later move to Delhi removed any remaining doubt about his LSG status.

The current squad contains several players with senior leadership experience. Nicholas Pooran has captained West Indies, Aiden Markram has led South Africa and an IPL franchise, and Mitchell Marsh has captained Australia in T20 cricket. This does not make any of them the confirmed LSG captain.

The choice affects more than the toss. Naming an overseas captain can shape the four-player overseas combination for every match. Naming a player already certain to start reduces that pressure. LSG should be listed with “captain not announced” until the franchise publishes the appointment.

LSG must solve a crowded overseas combination

The current overseas group is Nicholas Pooran, Josh Inglis, Matthew Breetzke, Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, George Linde and Anrich Nortje. Only four overseas players can appear in a playing XI.

Pooran, Inglis, Breetzke, Markram and Marsh compete for batting or wicketkeeping space. Nortje supplies pace and Linde offers spin with lower-order batting. A new overseas signing only makes sense if he can enter the first-choice XI or cover a defined role.

Justin Langer remains the current head coach. LSG have not separately published a final IPL 2027 support-staff list, so the table below reflects the latest team structure carried into the planning period.

Tom Moody spoke for the franchise when Pant stepped down. The captaincy choice, Kuldeep’s use and the Indian batting balance will define the next phase.

Ekana will reveal whether the reset has worked

Ekana Cricket Stadium remains LSG’s home ground. It can reward spin and changes of pace, but the playing XI still needs enough power for high-scoring games and pace control when defending totals.

LSG reached the playoffs before three difficult seasons

Lucknow Super Giants qualified for the Eliminator in their first two seasons, 2022 and 2023, but lost both matches. They finished seventh in 2024, seventh again in 2025 and 10th in 2026. LSG have not reached an IPL final or won the title.

RPSG Sports Private Limited owns the franchise, which represents Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh. The December 2026 IPL 2027 auction is the next major chance to correct the balance after the captaincy change and trade.
